Message from the Office of the President

Changes in the Office of Advancement

Effective today, August 6, 2009, John Singer is no longer Vice President Advancement. The Office of Advancement will report directly to the President until such time as the position is filled.

Tuition Waiver Benefit for Dependents

To all Lakehead University employees

The Canada Revenue Agency has revised its position on scholarship and tuition amounts paid by an employer to an employee's dependent. Accordingly, over the next several months, Financial Services will be revising T4s for all employees who had a taxable tuition waiver for family members/dependents processed against their taxable income in 2007 and 2008. T4As will be issued to the associated students for the amount of the tuition and shown as scholarship income. Taxable tuition waivers that were for the employee’s own education will not change.

Lakehead University will also be reversing all taxable tuition waivers for family members/dependents that have been charged to employees during August for the year 2009. Taxable tuition waivers that were for the employee’s own education will not change.

If you would like to have your personal income tax return adjusted, forward one copy of the revised T4/T4As to your tax services (Canada Revenue Agency) office with a letter requesting an adjustment. Alternatively, you can use their official form T1-ADJ (T1 Adjustment Request form) which is available online.

Please visit the Canada Revenue Agency website for more information.

If you have any questions, please contact Gail Wdowiak at ext 8143 or Rita Blais at ext 8526.
