Maple Leaf Educational Systems comes to Thunder Bay campus

Beginning this semester, you may notice a few new faces on our Thunder Bay campus.

In November 2018, Maple Leaf Education North America (the Canadian subsidiary of China Maple Leaf Educational Systems) and Lakehead University signed an agreement identifying our Thunder Bay campus as the site of its newest high school.

Maple Leaf Educational Systems (MLES) is China’s first and largest international school operator. Over the last ten years, many of its graduates have enrolled at Lakehead University.

Lakehead University and Maple Leaf Education Systems have a strong partnership that includes recruitment of students into a number of undergraduate degree programs, as well as opportunities for Lakehead University BEd students to complete a teaching placement at a Maple Leaf School in China.

Over the past couple of years, Lakehead and MLES discussed how we might expand our partnership, culminating in MLES leasing space in our Thunder Bay campus’s Avila Centre for the purpose of establishing the first high school of its kind in Ontario. MLES has enjoyed tremendous success with similar partnerships with two universities in British Columbia.

This September, MLES will welcome its first cohort of 30 Chinese students to its high school in our repurposed Avila Centre. In time, Maple Leaf will host 60 international students from grades 10-12 on our campus.

Maple Leaf Educational Systems offers its students a unique learning model that provides them the advantage of a small and personalized private high school education with the independence and advanced academic, cultural and recreational opportunities through its partnership universities.

Lakehead University is proud to work with Maple Leaf Schools, an organization that will provide students from China and around the world the experience of living and learning in our exceptional region of Canada, as well as opportunities for Lakehead Education students to complete teaching practicums in a unique classroom setting.

The Lakehead University community welcomes MLES — its students, staff, and principal, Monica Andrews — to our campus, to the City of Thunder Bay, and to Northwestern Ontario.
