In Memoriam: Dr. Anita Beltran-Chen

Dr. Anita Beltran-Chen, age 89 years, of Thunder Bay, passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2020 in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Anita was born on October 10, 1930 in Talisayan, Misamis Oriental, Philippines. She moved to Thunder Bay in 1964, where she was the Founding Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Lakehead University.

On December 11, 1998 she was the recipient of the Pamana Ng Filipino Award, conferred by the Philippine President in Malacnang Palace, Manila.

She was the Chartered Founder and first President of the Filipino-Canadian Association of Thunder Bay.

She was a long-time member of Trinity United Church and was a member of the choir.

As faculty and long-time supporters of Lakehead University, Drs. Anita and Min-sun Chen have always put students first. From student financial aid to the recent establishment of the International Student Lounge in the lower level of the Chancellor Paterson Library, the Chens have left a lasting legacy on the landscape of Lakehead University.

Anita is survived by her husband Min-sun and brother Ernesto, as well as numerous nieces and nephews in the US and Philippines.

She was predeceased by her parents Gerardo and Felisa Beltran; siblings Consolacion, Benita, Pacita, Gregoria, Encarnacion and Alejandro.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 11 am in Trinity United Church. Interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held tonight (Tuesday, Jan. 7) from 6 to 8 pm in Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley St. at Algoma.

In honour of Anita, the Lakehead Thunder Bay flag will be lowered to half-mast on Wednesday.

The larger of the double elevators has returned to service in the Centennial building, which means both elevators are now in service.

Lakehead University’s Shipping and Receiving

Effective December 23, 2019, Lakehead University’s Shipping and Receiving moved to 874 Tungsten (next to the Thunderwolves office). Hours of operation will remain the same: Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm.
