Lakehead University offers its condolences to all those touched by the crash of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752.

Lakehead University will be joining universities across Canada who will be participating in a moment of silence on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. Wherever you may be at that time, we encourage you to take a moment.

Canada’s University Community Mourns

Dear friend of Canada’s universities,

Please join Canada’s universities in a moment of silence at 1:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday, January 15th, 2020, one week after the devastating crash of UIA752 in Iran, to honour all those who perished.

This is to complement the incredibly meaningful and thoughtful actions already being undertaken by universities, communities, countries and all who were touched by this tragedy.

Of the 176 victims, many of the passengers were our students, faculty, researchers and alumni.

Involvement in this national gesture is voluntary and flexible. People and organizations can join in as they are able and as they deem appropriate. One of the best ways to take part is to follow us on social media and share our national message of condolence and the date and time of the moment of silence.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of this.

Nominations Are Now Open for the 2020 Indigenous Partnership Research Award

The Office of Aboriginal Initiatives would like to celebrate the partnerships between Lakehead University researchers and Indigenous communities and organizations by offering an annual award for Indigenous Partnership Research.

In the past, research has often been on Indigenous people(s), rather than with Indigenous people(s). Lakehead University believes that research partnerships that benefit both the researcher(s) and the Indigenous community are most likely to lead to more productive relationships with, and improved conditions for, Indigenous communities.

The Lakehead University Indigenous Partnership Research Award will be jointly awarded to a Lakehead University researcher or research team and a representative from their Indigenous partner(s), be it an individual, community or organization. The award consists of a certificate and a $500 cheque, one for researchers and one for the Indigenous partner.

Please see for more information and nomination form. Nominations are due Jan. 31, 2020.

Building Research Capacity at Lakehead University Award

To formally recognize the contributions of these dedicated individuals or groups to the University’s research capacity and productivity as a whole, Lakehead University invites nominations for the annual Building Research Capacity at Lakehead University Award.
