Some Lakehead employees will be affected by the CRA's new federal TD1 - Please Review

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) issued a new federal TD1 on their website on Thursday January 9, 2020.  The federal personal exemption is now tiered – two different exemption amounts, with a possible worksheet pro-ration calculation for the employee to complete.

The employee is required to estimate their ‘net income from all sources’ to determine which TD1 federal amount to use – or a pro-rated amount from the worksheet.  Your ‘net income from all sources’ is your net income as calculated on line 236 of your income tax return which you would estimate for the coming year 2020.

Here is the link to the federal TD1: dam/cra-arc/formspubs/pbg/td1/ td1-01-20e.pdf

and the TD1-WS: dam/cra-arc/formspubs/pbg/td1- ws/td1-ws-20e.pdf.

If your projected ‘net income from all sources’ for the year 2020 is greater than $150,473 please send an updated federal TD1 or federal TD1-WS to Payroll Services. No action is required by any other employee groups unless a change has occurred affecting any of the other deductions listed (for example Box 5 – Tuition – which would be your projected tuition for the year 2020).

This is the wording from the new federal TD1 for your reference:

“1. Basic personal amount – Every resident of Canada can claim this amount. If your ‘net income from all sources’* for the year will be $150,473 or less, enter $13,229. If your net income will be between $150,473 and $214,368 and you want to calculate a partial claim, get Form TD1-WS, Worksheet for the 2020 Personal Tax Credits Return, and fill in the appropriate section. If your net income will be between $150,473 and $214,368 and you do not want to calculate a partial claim, or if it will be more than $214,368, enter $12,298.”

If you have questions on this form you can reach the CRA at 1-800-959-8281.
