Call for Faculty Senator Nominations - Deadline Friday, March 20

Nominations for elected faculty members on the Senate are being accepted for three vacancies with the terms commencing on July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2023.

If more than three eligible nominations are received, an election will be conducted. Self nominations are not accepted for elected positions.

Please note the following eligibility clauses:

  • Eligible to Nominate and Vote: All Faculty Members who are and have been members of the teaching staff of Lakehead University for at least 12 months and who are not at present members of the Senate. 
  • Eligible to be Nominated and Elected: Any Faculty Member who is and has been a member of the teaching staff of Lakehead University for at least the previous 24 months and who is not a continuing member of the Senate.

For the purposes of the Senate, Faculty Member is defined in Senate Bylaws as "the following employees of Lakehead University:

  • Members of the full-time academic staff with the rank of Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor, and
  • Contract Lecturers who are teaching four or more half course equivalents (HCE's) and have previously taught more than 30 HCE's

For greater clarity, this includes Chairs and Directors of academic units but does not include the President, Vice-President, Deans, and other individuals holding administrative positions where more than fifty percent of their University salary is received for their administrative functions."

Lakehead Dining Services Official Statement

Effective Saturday, March 21.

Over the past few weeks, the spread of COVID-19 has affected all of us. Our top priority has always been the health and safety of our employees and customers. Like most, we are taking the necessary steps to help prevent and reduce the spread of COVID-19.

In order to ensure workplace safety and maintain a safe environment to serve our customers, we have decided to keep the Residence Cafeteria and Starbucks locations open with strict regulations. Library Café, Persian Man ATAC, Main Cafeteria, Subway and Dan’s Diner are closed until further notice.

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Unit mandates we operate on a take-out only basis. The Residence Cafeteria will remain open operating as take-out only during the posted times below. Starbucks will operate on reduced hours and also as take-out only. At this time there is no information on when we will return to regular operations. With ongoing precautions being implemented by the Ontario government these operations are subject to change.

Website Training Postponed

To prevent the further spread of COVID-19 the Website Training session scheduled for March 24th has been postponed.

Anyone who previously RSVP'd will be notified when a new session is scheduled.

Connecting: an online teaching community for Lakehead instructors

Have you looked for just the right resource to help you transition to online instruction, but you still have a few burning questions? 

Are you just looking to bounce some ideas off of colleagues about how to handle final presentations, assessment, or any number of topics? Consider joining the Lakehead-only Google Group called “Connecting” where instructors familiar with Lakehead resources, students, and other local factors are supporting each other during this time of transition.

Please note that the group’s focus is teaching, and right now the discussion is focused on the transition to online.  But this group is available year-round, year to year. 

Research Year-End Deadlines

Research Grants funded from the Federal and Provincial Governments and their Agencies have a financial reporting period ending March 31, 2020. This includes NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, CRC, MOHLTC, OPIC, OCE and many others. If you are uncertain if this applies to your grant, please contact Margot Ross ext. 8730 or by email at

All 2019/20 transactions must be dated March 31, 2020 or earlier to be included in the 2019/2020 financial reporting period. It is the responsibility of each researcher to submit their paperwork before the deadlines listed below. The transactions received before these deadlines will be included in the 2019/2020 research financial reporting period.


All cheques and cash dated prior to March 31, 2020 must be received by Accounts on or before Friday April 17, 2020 in order to be processed with a March date. All such deposits made after April 18th will be April dated.


All March dated invoices for external customers must be requested and processed by OFS by Friday, April 17, 2020.


All purchasing card statements for the period ending March 31st must be in the Office of Financial Services on or before Monday, April 6, 2020. The March 2020 statement will include all activity up to March 27. Activity after March 27 will be recorded as an April 2020 transaction. Purchasing Card adjustment requests made after April 30, 2020 will be processed as April 2020 transactions and included in the 2020/21 reports.

Payroll Time Cards and Wage payments

All staff forms for work performed prior to March 28th must be submitted to Human Resources by Friday, March 13 for inclusion in the 2019/20 period.

Time cards for the period up to Saturday March 28th are to be submitted by the March 29th time entry deadline. Time cards information relating to March 30th & 31st will be processed as a 2020/21 transaction.


Interdepartmental charges for goods received or services rendered before March 31, 2020 must be in the Office of Financial Services on or before May 8, 2020 for processing in 2019/20.


Travel costs incurred prior to March 31, 2020 must be submitted no later than Friday April 17, 2020 to be dated as 2019/20 items. All outstanding travel advances relating to the 2019/2020 grant period must be cleared by that date also.


Suppliers’ invoices received directly by the researcher for goods received or services rendered prior to March 31, 2020 must be in Accounts Payable no later than Friday April 17, 2020.


All requests for transfers must be received by the Office of Financial Services prior to Friday May 8, 2020 to be processed in the 2019/20 fiscal year.

All correspondence and meetings with members of the Office of Financial Services regarding 19/20 transfers or corrections to actual must be arranged prior to Friday May 8, 2020.

These deadlines must be adhered to in order for the timely preparation and submission of the statements of accounts to the funding agencies.
