Dr. Bill Cole, Hardwood Ecosystem Research Scientist, Ontario Forest Research Institute, OMNR, will present, "Some observations on forest-lake interactions in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence forest of Ontario." Background: Ontario has more than 250,000 lakes, many with undeveloped, forested shorelines. In most of central Ontario, forested riparian zones have had varying levels of protection from tree harvesting since at least the mid-20th century. However, the long-term effects of previous management practices are still evident. We need a better understanding of riparian and nearshore ecological processes and our management impacts on riparian and nearshore zones to meet the objectives of federal and provincial management regulations and guidelines. A series of studies on forest-lake ecotone coarse wood ecology and fish habitat is providing new insights into central Ontario's riparian and lake edge ecosystems.
