Thunderwolves Hockey to be Broadcast Live on TBT
Lakehead University and Dougall Media are pleased to announce an exciting new television broadcast partnership that will give Thunderwolves’ hockey fans across Northwestern Ontario and around Canada the chance to watch exciting live Thunderwolves hockey. Dougall Media will broadcast select home games from the Fort William Gardens on Thunder Bay Television CTV-CHFD television. The games will be available throughout TBTV-CHFD’s broadcast footprint, including nationally via Bell Express Vu and Star Choice satellite television networks. Alumni, Students Pitch in to Raise Funds for Lakehead U

Lakehead University Paleo-DNA Laboratory, Genesis Genomics Expanding
Lakehead University’s Paleo-DNA Laboratory, along with Genesis Genomics, received funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) today. This funding, to be used toward expansion of the facilities, was announced by The Honorable Rick Bartolucci, Minister of Northern Development and Mines and Chair of NOHFC. A New Era for Cancer Research in Thunder Bay
commitment to work together to "enhance tomorrow's cancer care“ was made this morning by the leadership teams at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (Regional Health), Lakehead University (Lakehead U), and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM). The three senior executives announced today the creation of a new institute of cancer research in Thunder Bay. The new research partnership, ICR Discoveries, will bring together the best cancer research talent of the three institutions. Ultimately, the partnership will grow the critical mass of cancer researchers in the city and attract new dollars to Thunder Bay for cancer care clinical trials, medical physics and imaging research, wet lab or biosciences research, health outcomes research, and supportive care or psychosocial research. Lakehead University has retained its spot as Canada’s number one university for Value Added in Maclean’s annual university ranking issue 2004. This is the third time Lakehead has been number 1 in Value Added, and the seventh year it has been in the top three. Value Added measures the entering average of students and achievement through the retention rate, the proportion who graduate, and the number of students receiving national awards. OPAS Presents 2004 Visionary Award to Pamela Wallin
On Monday, November 8, 2004, Pamela Wallin, Canada’s Consul-General to New York will be presented with the OPAS Visionary Award for 2004. Ms. Wallin’s address, entitled “Canada-U.S. Relations – The View from New York” is being sponsored by Bell ExpressVu and will take place at the University of Toronto. The presentation will also be transmitted live via satellite and webcast to more than 3,000 participants from 30 university campuses in all ten provinces. Lakehead University’s Student Placement & Co-op Centre is giving students a head start on their career search by bringing national employers to campus. Career Day 2004 takes place tomorrow, Wednesday, October 6, in the Agora from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is a chance for students and graduates to talk one-on-one with potential employers, learn about various career choices, and find out about hiring processes. There will be approximately 30 employers at the fair this year who have full-time, part-time, and future summer opportunities for students and graduates. Lakehead U Forestry Students Compete in International Competition
Some of Lakehead University’s top Forestry students will be showing their stuff at an international competition next week. A team of six students will be in a battle of wits against other North American forestry schools in game-show style competition called the "Quiz Bowl." This competition will cover over 20 forestry-related topics including Geographic Information Systems; Wildlife and Fish Ecology; Urban and Community Forestry; and Philosophy and History of Forestry. Sarah Link, a sessional instructor in Visual Arts, has recently been inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Dr. Lorne Everett, Chancellor of Lakehead U, chaired the World Pollution Panel meetings and presented the status report on World Pollution to the World Federation of Scientists at the World Laboratory, Ettory Majorana Foundation, and Center for Scientific and Culture in Erice (Italy) on August 23, 2004. Kezia Pickard, who received her BA in English and Philosophy this past May, is a recipient of a prestigious J. Lakehead’s Paleo-DNA Laboratory First University Lab Accredited for Forensic Testing
Lakehead University’s Paleo-DNA Laboratory is the first university laboratory in Canada to become accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) for Forensic DNA testing. “Accreditation of the Paleo-DNA Laboratory is an incredible event,” says Dr. Carney Matheson, Director of the Laboratory. “Only a handful of private laboratories are accredited by the SCC for Forensic Biology/DNA testing. This is testament that our lab conducts world-class DNA and forensic research. Lakehead U Receives Major Research Boost from the CFI
Two Lakehead University researchers have been honoured by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). Dr. Andrew Conly and Dr. Baoqiang Liao each received a CFI New Opportunities Grant to support their research efforts. Dr. Conly, with the Geology Department, is receiving $ 125,914 for an infra-red (IR) spectroscopy and hydrothermal experimental facility and Dr. Liao, with the Chemical Engineering Department, is receiving $73,588 for a laboratory for particle science and technology. Lakehead U Nursing Students Hold Forum at Regional Health Sciences Centre
The 4th year Bachelor of Science in Nursing students at Lakehead University will be able to claim a “first.” On Friday, April 2, the students are holding their 2nd Annual Nursing Scholarship Forum at the brand-new TBRHSC, and are in a sense "baptizing" the premises. Lakehead University Celebrates Excellence in Research
For more than a quarter of a century, Lakehead University has been involved in leading-edge research. During that time, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has supported the work of Lakehead University researchers through operating and equipment grants.
