Lakehead U to Participate in Megaconference VII
Lakehead University will be connecting to the rest of the world on Thursday, December 1. From 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. in ATAC 5036, Megaconference VII will be taking place. This is the second year that Lakehead U has participated in this worldwide event. Lakehead is one of only two participating Bridging Services sites for Canada, and the multimedia team at the University will be connecting 10 sites to the rest of the world. International Geographers Coming to Lakehead U
Lakehead University’s Geography Department is hosting an international event in the spring of 2006. Lakehead U Researcher Receives Funding to Study Canadian Boreal Forest
Lakehead University professor in the Faculty of Forestry and the Forest Environment has received a major grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Lakehead U Education Professor Wins National Arts Award
A Lakehead University Faculty of Education professor has won a Canadian Society for Education through Art (CSEA) award for excellence in art teaching and research. Dr. Fiona Blaikie was presented with the CSEA Affiliate Award (Visual Arts) for Ontario at CSEA’s annual conference in October. CSEA is a national group that aims to promote excellence in art education. Dr. Blaikie’s nomination was evaluated on the following criteria: proven excellence in teaching and/or research; proven leadership in art education; significant contributions to art education; and upholding the mandate of the CSEA. Research Project Looks at Improving Quality of Life for Individuals with Multiple Sclerosis
A Lakehead University Kinesiology student is looking for research participants in a 10-week yoga research program for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). As part of her Master’s research project, Jaime Kirstein will be determining if yoga affects balance, spasticity, mobility, and quality of life for people with MS. People who participate will need to make a twice-weekly commitment of a one-hour yoga session. It’s that time of year again — the time when students and faculty alike are gearing up for the new academic year. Starting on Friday, September 2, Lakehead University will come alive again with youthful energy as students check out the campus and move into residence. Lakehead U Offers Unique Opportunity to Non-traditional students
Lakehead University’s Faculty of Education has developed a unique opportunity for non-traditional students in Thunder Bay. A new program called Humanities 101: A Lakehead University Community Initiative is being offered as a non-credit Lakehead U course to people who may not otherwise have the chance to attend post-secondary education. The first of it’s kind in Ontario, this multidisciplinary course involves faculty members from around the university, and will cover issues related to Social Work, Aboriginal Studies, Political Science, Women’s Studies, Anthropology, English, Music, and Philosophy. Partnership to Identify IT Economic Opportunities
Representatives from three levels of government as well as the public and private sectors of Northwestern Ontario have come together to study current information and communications technology challenges and opportunities. The study, which is the first of its kind involving all levels of government and the public and private sectors, is being carried out because the partners believe that sharing human and capital resources will greatly improve the individual and collective ability to advance technology solutions in this region. Eco-Literacy Camp Offers Unique Educational Summer Experience for Children
There is a unique learning opportunity being offered to children at Lakehead University this summer. The Faculty of Education’s Department of Lifelong Learning will be hosting the Eco-Literacy Adventure Camp. The Eco-Literacy Adventure camp is an educational program that uses ecologically based reading material throughout the camp, and includes high-energy games, outdoor activities, art projects, and other creative approaches to reading comprehension. City Students Ace Math Contest
The third annual TD Canada Trust Thunder Bay High School Math Contest was written by 135 city students on May 11. This number is up from 67 in 2003 and 96 in 2004. Contest problems, marking, and administration are provided by the members of the Department of Mathematical Sciences of Lakehead University, with the very able assistance of Ryan Holm, a 2002 graduate of St. Ignatius High School who is now a mathematics major at Waterloo University, and who is a holder of a prestigious NSERC summer student research grant, working under the direction of the Mathematical Sciences Department at Lakehead University. Lakehead U Students Win National Competition
Three Lakehead University Electrical Engineering students have won a major award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Chris Erickson, Jeffrey Cowan, and Andrej Zlatanovic are the first-place winners of the Life Member Award 2004 IEEE Canada Student Paper Competition for the Central Canada Council. Lakehead U Receives $2.1 Million in Research Grants
Lakehead University is pleased to announce the results of the annual competition of Science and Engineering Research Canada (NSERC). In the 2005 competition, in terms of the first year of the grant, Lakehead University has received almost triple the amount of new NSERC grant money compared with last year’s grants. 22 researchers will be benefiting from these grants. These researchers join Lakehead’s roster of 46 other NSERC-funded researchers. In the recent NSERC competition, the total value of new NSERC Discovery Grants awarded to Lakehead was $2,156,450 over five years. During this competition, five Research Tools and Instruments Grants were also awarded to Lakehead, totalling $260,381. Lakehead U Looking for Memorabilia and Photos
It’s been 40 years since Lakehead became a university. During that time there have been countless memorabilia such as yearbooks, shirts, jackets, caps, and pins, as well as thousands upon thousands of photos taken. The Lakehead U 40th Anniversary Historical Committee is looking for memorabilia items and photos to display throughout the year in celebration of the University’s 40th anniversary. Items/photos will be displayed in secure display cases on campus and around the city. Lakehead U Students Share Expertise Abroad
Two Lakehead University students will be heading abroad to help promote good governance in developing countries and fragile states. Jobb Arnold will be heading to Butare, Rwanda, and Jarin Stewart will be in Lijiang, China. Arnold and Stewart are taking part in the Canada Corps Initiative. Canada Corps is a way for Canadians to work together to promote good governance and institution-building. It is designed to mobilize citizens of all backgrounds, together with non-governmental organizations and all levels of government. Banana Split Film Wins at Media Festival
The internationally acclaimed documentary Banana Split has been named Best Feature Length Documentary at the Latin American Environmental Media Festival in New Orleans earlier this month. Banana Split was produced and directed by Dr. Ron Harpelle of Lakehead University’s History Department, and local filmmaker, Kelly Saxberg. The Festival was seeking innovative and provocative films, videos, and digital media that address environmental issues in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the works needed to address issues of the environment and environmental justice. Students Examining the Future of Nursing
Lakehead University Nursing students will be looking toward the future on Monday, April 4. The Third Annual Nursing Scholarship Forum, entitled 'The Future of Nursing Possibilities,' takes place at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center in the 3rd Floor Auditorium. The Forum is an opportunity for fourth-year nursing students to demonstrate their scholarly skills in an appropriate setting. The day-long event represents a culmination of the fourth-year students’ learning experience throughout their program, and is supported by the nursing faculty. Ontario’s Environmental Commissioner to Speak at Lakehead U
Gord Miller, the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, will be the next guest for the Lakehead University Speaker Series. On Tuesday, March 29, Miller will be addressing environmental issues in Ontario and what the Government can do to help. His talk, entitled “Choosing our Legacy, Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, 2003-2004 Annual Report,” will focus on one of the most significant environmental laws to be passed in the last 25 years —the Environmental Bill of Rights (EBR). Lakehead U Announces New PhD in Forest Sciences
Lakehead University is pleased to announce a new PhD-level program — Doctor of Philosophy in Forest Sciences. This new doctoral program will be accepting students in September, 2005. On March 9, 1995, students at Lakehead University took a gigantic step forward and opened the doors of The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Centre, a student resource centre focused on educating people on issues of homophobia and creating a safe space on campus for all students, staff, and faculty. There have been some reports of suspicious calls being made in the name of Lakehead University to the Thunder Bay community. Lakehead U is currently conducting a phone campaign; however, these reported “scam” callers are asking for personal information (Social Insurance Number, annual income, etc.), which Lakehead’s legitimate callers do not require. Lakehead University, City of Orillia Approve Partnership to Develop Satellite Campus in Orillia
Lakehead University and the City of Orillia are pleased to announce that an agreement in principle has been reached to develop a satellite campus of the University in Orillia. Such a collaboration would offer, initially, academic courses and programs that can be partnered with Georgian College; would respond to the City of Orillia’s interests in international studies, aboriginal studies, and tourism; and are linked to the distributed learning capacity of Lakehead University’s Thunder Bay campus. Lakehead University President Term Extended
Jackie Dojack, Chair of the Board of Governors of Lakehead University, today announced the renewal of the contract of Dr. Frederick Gilbert, President of Lakehead University. The unanimous vote of confidence by the Board of Governors extends Dr. Gilbert’s current contract, which was due to be completed on December 31, 2006, to May 31, 2010.
