Dr. Aris Carastathis to Compose New Music for Viola and Guitar
Dr. Aristocles (Aris) Carastathis, a Professor of Music and former Chair of Lakehead University’s Department of Music, has been named one of four Canadian recipients of the Norman Burgess Memorial Fund. Lakehead University's Digital Information Package Opens Innovative Doors for New Student Orientation
Lakehead University has developed digital orientation packages for its new students (2007). As opposed to the former paperbound document, this university-wide initiative will allow incoming students to access valuable university information by USB key, a standardized serial computer interface that allows simplified attachment of peripherals. New Interdisciplinary Graduate Program Focuses on Northern Environments and Cultures
Today, Lakehead University’s Faculty of Graduate Studies, in conjunction with the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies, announced a new Master’s program in Environmental Studies that is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2007. The program is a Master of Environmental Studies – Northern Environments and Cultures and is the first of its kind in Ontario. It will concentrate on the inhabitants and environments in Canada's Boreal Forest, and as far north as its boundary with the Tundra — territory described as the "mid-north," "near-north," or "provincial north," and sometimes referred to as the "forgotten north." Lakehead Shads Develop Zero Waste Technology Product for 2007 National Shad Cup Competition
Lakehead University's 2007 Shads have determined that the R-Card, a zero waste technology product will be entered into the National Shad Cup, to be held this October in Waterloo, Ontario. This prototype, developed by e-finity, is designed to reduce paper waste generated by consumer receipts, while also simplifying financial record keeping. According to the group's business plan, "e-finity strives to provide ease of use and efficiency to consumers in an environmentally responsible fashion. The R-Card eliminates paper receipt waste while providing a convenient organizational tool for consumers." Lowly Barbed Wire Stars in Film - Historian Secures Funding for Documentary on Barbed Wire
Professor Ron Harpelle of the Department of History has secured a total of $50,000 from two funding agencies for the production of a documentary film on barbed wire. Study on New Omega-3 Supplement Looks at Treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Children
Researchers at Lakehead University are studying the link between Eye Q, a new Omega-3 fatty acid supplement, and its effects on ADHD. The first clinical trial will be conducted by the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Psychology at Lakehead University, and facilitated by the Children's Centre Thunder Bay. Lakehead University Researchers Awarded $577,495 in SSHRC Grants
Lakehead University faculty members have received five new Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) grants this year, totalling $264,995. The projects span various disciplines including Sociology, Economics, and Outdoor Recreation. Grants will be used to build upon each researcher's field of study. In addition, 13 Lakehead graduate students received Canada Graduate Scholarships (11 Master's students, and two PhD students). The total value of these graduate student awards is $312,500. Lakehead's Centennial Building Re-named in Honour of University's First President
Today, students, faculty, staff, and special guests gather at the Centennial Building Courtyard to participate in a dedication ceremony honouring Dr. William (Bill) Tamblyn, Lakehead's first President and Vice Chancellor. The Centennial Building will now be referred to as the William (Bill) Tamblyn Centennial Building. As one of the first major buildings on campus during his presidency, the re-naming is fitting and symbolizes the role that Dr. Tamblyn played in building Lakehead. NSERC Awards Lakehead Researchers $2 Million
Eighteen researchers will be able to start or continue important research work with the awarding of funds in the latest funding announcement from NSERC. A total of $2,003,346 has been awarded to Lakehead University researchers representing a broad spectrum of disciplines, including Engineering, Computer Sciences, Forestry, Medicine, Physics, Geology, Chemistry, and Biology. Lakehead University Canada Research Chairs Renewed
Lakehead University is very pleased to announce that two Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs (CRCs) have been renewed for another five years each. Dr. Lionel Catalan and Dr. Gary Genosko have each been renewed for their research work on Industrial Waste and for Technoculture Studies, respectively. Lakehead Establishes Interdisciplinary Research Program on Safe Driving
Lakehead University is pleased to announce that a proposal to establish an Interdisciplinary Research Program on Safe Driving (IRPSD) at Lakehead University has been approved. The IRPSD was proposed by Lakehead University’s Dr. Michel Bedard, Canada Research Chair, as an interdisciplinary program to increase knowledge of the respective contributions of the driver, the vehicle, and road characteristics and conditions toward safe driving behaviour across the lifespan. The Program aims to promote knowledge gained in this area to reduce vehicular accidents and optimize safe driving. Among the disciplines that will be represented at the Center are Biostatistics, Engineering, Gerontology, Health, Human Factors, Kinesiology, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Psychology. Funded through the NSERC Research Capacity Development Grant, the Program will utilize the expertise of experienced and emerging researchers. Partnership Strengthens Education and Research on Aging and Health
Dr. Larry W. Prehistoric Use of Plants Uncovered in Eastern Europe
Ten years ago, as the war in ex-Yugoslavia was raging, Tim Kaiser, Professor of Archaeology at Lakehead University - Orillia Campus, was excavating a prehistoric cave on the island of Hvar. The secluded cave, called Grapceva, turned out to have been occupied between 8,000 and 3,000 years ago by the descendants of Europe’s first farmers. Lakehead University – Orillia Campus Faculty and Staff Give Back to the Community
The faculty and staff at Lakehead University – Orillia Campus have been working hard to give back to a local community service which has helped them in the past. The North Simcoe Victim Crisis Services came to the aid of Lakehead University – Orillia Campus faculty, staff, and students when they were dealing with the loss of faculty member Dr. Jiri Smrz on November 15, 2006. Since that time, the 19 staff and faculty members have been working hard to raise funds internally to donate back.
