Lakehead University Geology Receives $10,000 from ACTlabs
The Lakehead University Geology Department has received a $10,000 donation from the Activation Laboratories Group of Companies (ACTlabs), a group which performs analytical services for clientele located worldwide. Coming on the heels of a $10,000 donation from CDN Resource Laboratories, the ACTlabs funds will also be used for the purchase of microscopes. International Polar Year & Climate Change Symposium March 6 - 7 Young Scholars to Participate in Dialogue
International Polar Year (IPY), a large scientific programme centred on the Arctic and the Antarctic from March 2007 to March 2009, has galvanized polar research around the globe. Organized through the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), it involves over 200 projects (several led by Canadians), with thousands of scientists from over 60 nations examining a wide range of physical, biological, and social research topics. Researcher’s Monograph Uses Data to Improve Student Achievement
Dr. Christina Van Barneveld, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at Lakehead University, has written a monograph Using Data to Improve Student Achievement. Published by the Ontario Ministry of Education's Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat, the monograph focuses primarily on research that evaluates school data use in order to highlight some effective practices in this fast-changing area, and to forge connections between research and practice. Art Education Fundamental to Human Development: Lakehead Professor
Life imitates art far more than art imitates life. This famous Oscar Wilde statement contains the idea that the experience of life is modeled after a template provided by artistic works—that in an important way, art is prior to life, informing our experience, rather than depicting it after the fact. If this is true, then developing an understanding of and appreciation for art is key to living a fulfilled life. As a result, art education would be a crucial part of coming of age. Public Presentation: Inuit Perspectives on Polar Bears and Climate Change Addresses Management Issues
Climate change is the number one threat to the sparse population of polar bears that remain in the world, according to a new report from the World Wildlife Federation (WWF). With other threats including hunting, heavy metal pollution, and plans for future oil exploration in the Arctic, polar bear populations need careful management that is inclusive of a variety of perspectives. Students Receive $48,000 Toward Post-Secondary Education in One Year

Lakehead Bioethicist Speaks at National Conference on Flu Pandemic Preparedness
Dr. Jaro Kotalik, Director of the Lakehead University Centre for Health Care Ethics, will be delivering a paper and participating in a panel discussion at the Canadian Pandemic Preparedness Meeting, held in Winnipeg on November 6-8. The conference, a gathering of researchers and those responsible for pandemic planning in the country, is organized by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and is expected to accelerate the uptake of vital research knowledge for the benefit of Canadians. First Nations Input Key to Polar Bear Survival Strategies in Canada
Polar bears, the symbol of the arctic wilderness, live on all the arctic seas and coasts, including areas from the Yukon to Labrador, north to Ellesmere Island, and south to James Bay. There are approximately fourteen populations, totalling 15,000 bears in Canada, and over 1,000 of these are found in Northern Ontario alone. However, recent concerns over the health of the polar bear in general have put them on Manitoba's threatened species list, and have given them "threatened" status on the United States Endangered Species List. Lakehead University’s Board of Governors is pleased to introduce new Chair Kevin Cleghorn, new Vice Chair Colin Bruce, and new members Ewan Downie, Anthony LeBlanc, Darlene Palmer, Frances Picherack, Gillian Siddall, Ethel Gardner, Vonnie Cheng, and Slim Baby. Members were approved at the Board’s October 17, 2008 annual meeting. International Research Team Discovers Key to Blood Pressure Control
An international team of scientists has discovered that cells inside the blood vessels of mice – as well as in people – naturally produce hydrogen sulfide or H2S, a gas with the smell of rotten eggs, and this gas controls blood pressure. The research team comprises scientists from Lakehead University in Ontario, University of Saskatchewan, and Johns Hopkins. $100,000 Expands CERAH’s End-of-Life Care Research in 12 First Nations Communities
Lakehead University's Centre for Education and Research on Aging and Health (CERAH), in partnership with the Kenora Chiefs' Advisory and the Fort Frances-based Gizhewaadiziwin Health Access Centre, has received $100,000 from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) for a project entitled Improving End-of-Life Care for Aboriginal Elders with Cancer and other Chronic Diseases. Geology Professor Named 2008 Gross Award Recipient
Lakehead University is pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Hollings, Associate Professor of Geology, is the recipient of the 2008 William Harvey Gross Award. Lakehead Receives $2,425,837 in NSERC Funding: A Range of Grants Awarded to University’s Researchers, and Graduate and Undergraduate Students
Today, Industry Minister Jim Prentice announced approximately $535 million in Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Canada (NSERC) funding and scholarships, to be distributed to more than 9,900 professors and students at more than 60 higher education institutions across Canada. Lakehead University is a proud recipient of this funding. Twenty-two of its researchers, 11 graduate students, and 21 undergraduate students have been awarded NSERC's 2008 Discovery Grants, Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) Grants, Postgraduate Scholarships, or Undergraduate Student Research Awards totalling $2,449,462. Lakehead’s Do Something Ad Campaign Takes CCAE Gold

It is somehow appropriate that the winner of the 2008 Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and the TD Bank Financial Group's $10,000 cash prize, be an author with an interest in the foibles of federal politics. Fundraiser gets Hairy: Lakehead Residence Students set Cutz for Cancer Goal
It has become an annual tradition for Lakehead Residence Students to raise money in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. They do this by collecting pledges for the Residence's annual Cutz for Cancer event, and subsequently by shaving their heads and cutting their locks – or in some cases, by shaving their beards.
