Lakehead Historians Explore Social Impacts of Forestry: Comparing Declining Industry in Canada and Finland to Boom in Uruguay
History Professors Michel Beaulieu and Ronald Harpelle recently attended an international conference in Uruguay to further their research into the social impacts of declining forest industries in Canada and Finland compared to the boom taking place in Uruguay. The goal of the conference was to discuss natural resource communities within the three countries. Lakehead U Researchers Strive to Educate Canadians on Safe Driving Practices
The mandate of Lakehead University's Centre for Research on Safe Driving (CRSD) is to conduct research on safe driving and educate Canadian drivers to reduce the number of vehicular crashes and subsequent injuries and fatalities by raising awareness of safe driving practices across the country. National Safe Driving Week runs from December 1 through 7, and CRSD researchers are urging all drivers to do something, however small, to make our roads safe all year round. Lakehead's Centre for Northern Studies Represented at Recent Polar Bear Recovery Strategy Workshop
Dr. Martha Dowsley and Dr. Harvey Lemelin attended a the two-day workshop which aimed to develop a recovery plan for the species which was recently listed as threatened in Ontario. The plan is expected to be released to the public by early next year, with the entire process wrapping up by fall 2011. The meeting, held in Timmins from October 28 to 29, was hosted jointly by the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, and was attended by First Nations representatives from communities located along the Hudson and James Bay coasts, agency personnel, and researchers from across Canada. Lakehead Shads get Top Marks at 2010 Cup
Lakehead's 2010/2011 Shad Valley team won first place for the Best Marketing Plan and Best Application of Scientific Principles awards, second place for Best Overall Project, and third place for Best Business Plan. Their product, called V720, is a capsule that meets consumer demand for a safe, effective, and non-invasive method of delivering the influenza vaccine into the bloodstream. The Shads and other top high-school students from around the country gathered in Waterloo on November 5 to share their unique innovations related to Canada's aging population at the prestigious 2010 Research In Motion/Shad Entrepreneurship Cup. New Research to Improve End-of-Life Care in First Nations Communities
Today, Lakehead announced receipt of a $1.825 million Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Aboriginal Health Intervention Grant, the largest CIHR grant the University has ever received. The grant was awarded to a research team comprising representation from Lakehead University's Centre for Education on Research and Aging in Health (CERAH), St. Joseph's Health System's Research Network, and four First Nations communities from areas across Ontario and Manitoba. Lakehead's Biorefining Research Initiative (BRI) Receives Funding for Lignin Research
Lakehead University is pleased to announce receipt of an NSERC Collaborative Research and Development (CRD) grant in the amount of $621,200 over a four-year period for the University's Biorefining Research Initiative (BRI). The grant will foster research on the "Enzymatic Modification of Lignin for Polymer Applications." The award for this environmentally friendly process is the BRI's first from NSERC. Lakehead University Increases First Choice High School Applicants: More students list Lakehead University as first choice on university applications
Lakehead University has seen a 7.9% increase in the number of high school students who have listed Lakehead as their first university choice for the 2010-2011 academic year compared to last year at this time. Additionally, overall applications from high school students to Lakehead are up 6.2%. According to data recently released by the Ontario Universities Applications Centre (OUAC), universities across the province have comparatively lower average application increases of 2.7% and 2.1% respectively.
