Last Chance Tourism: Lakehead Professor Co-Edits Book on Adapting Tourism in a Changing World
Concerns over vanishing destinations such as the Great Barrier Reef, Antarctica, and the ice cap on Mt. Kilimanjaro have prompted some travel operators and tour agencies to recommend these destinations to consumers before they disappear. This travel trend has been reported as: 'disappearing tourism,' 'doom tourism,' and most commonly 'last chance tourism.' Despite this increasing form of travel there has been little examination in the academic literature of last chance tourism phenomenon. Last Chance Tourism: Adapting Tourism Opportunities in a Changing World, is a timely and multidisciplinary volume featuring contributions from leading scholars in the fields of leisure, tourism, anthropology, geography, and sociology. Lakehead University Music Program Helps Improves Quality of Life for Residents in Long-Term Care Homes
Eleven students enrolled in Lakehead University's Department of Music course, Creative Community Engagements in Music, have the unique opportunity to apply their knowledge to create a program for residents in two local long-term care homes. Students and instructors Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans and Professor Lise Vaugeois, are working closely with the staff at St. Joseph's Care Group at Bethammi Nursing Home and Hogarth Riverview Manor to organize music activities with residents. Lakehead U and RBC Wrap Up Joint Aboriginal Outreach Program
Today, Lakehead University and RBC celebrated the success of the pilot Joint Aboriginal Outreach Project launched in November 2010. The project, a joint initiative between Lakehead's Office of Aboriginal Initiatives and RBC, introduced Aboriginal youth to education options and support systems at Lakehead University while strengthening RBC's relationship with the Aboriginal community. Science Olympics Takes Off - High School Students from City and Region Strive for the Podium at Lakehead’s PACI
Lakehead's Science Olympics is back - bigger and better than ever. Lakehead University's Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies and Faculty of Education, together with Youth Science Ontario, is hosting its second Lakehead University Science Olympics, taking place at PACI. By solving problems in a collaborative manner, Science Olympics helps increase awareness of the importance of science in everyday life. Science Olympics is a one-day event, for students in grades 9 through 12, that requires teams of four to apply their knowledge of science and engineering in creative and fun ways. Lakehead Creates the Chief Roy Michano Series with 600+ Aboriginal Artworks Donated by George and Kelly Ward
Colourful artwork graced the halls of historic PACI as Lakehead University gratefully accepted and displayed some of over 600+ pieces of Aboriginal art donated by local businessman and art collector George Ward and his wife Kelly Ward. George and Kelly have been adding to their collection for decades and have purchased or received works by over a dozen artists, many of whom are children or relatives of famed Woodland artist Norval Morrisseau. Lakehead Athletics and Wasaya Airways Bring Sport and Leadership to Fly-In Communities
oday, Wasaya Airways and Lakehead University signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Wasaya Airways Thunder Bay hangar and announced Reach Up! - Northern Community Sports and Leadership Program. Reach Up! is a collaborative initiative between Lakehead University Athletics and Wasaya Airways to provide on-site instruction in sport-specific coaching and general leadership strategies for youth in Northern Ontario First Nations communities serviced by Wasaya Airways. Lakehead University Orillia Showcases Campus at Open Doors – Open Knowledge Event
Lakehead University joined more than 50 universities across Canada this week to celebrate the success of the federal government's Knowledge Infrastructure program (KIP) which strengthened Canada's research, innovation, and education capacity in ways that will benefit Canadians for generations to come. Today, at its Orillia campus, Lakehead University hosted an Open Doors - Open Knowledge event to acknowledge the receipt of $13 million in federal funding under the KIP program for the construction of its Academic Building at 500 University Avenue. Improving Brook Trout Habitat: Nipigon Bay's Kama Creek Restoration Underway
Starting mid-October 2011, Nipigon Bay's Kama Creek has been part of an ecological restoration project to help revitalize fish populations as part of the Nipigon Bay Remedial Action Plan (RAP). The Kama project is a unique partnership between the RAP Public Advisory Committee, Environment Canada, the Ontario Ministries of the Environment and Natural Resources, and Lakehead University to coordinate the design, development, and construction, as well as ecological assessment and monitoring of Kama Creek. Jesuit Diary Brings the Past to Life
Professor of French and Lakehead's former Chair of the Department of Languages, Alain Nabarra has recently transcribed and edited the diary of Fr. du Ranquet, considered one of the most important Canadian missionaries of the 19th century. This previously unpublished 756 page manuscript spans over almost 25 years, from 1853 to 1877. This new volume publishes the first part of the Journal, 1853-1856, and includes a postface by John O'Meara, Dean of Lakehead's Faculty of Education. Lakehead University has improved its standing in several measurement categories in the recently released Maclean's Ranking of Canadian Universities 2011. Lakehead Engineering Students Society Hold 31st Annual Charity Bus Pull to Support Big Brothers Big Sisters
Today, the Engineering Students Society of Lakehead University (ESS) held its 31st annual charity bus pull on. Teams competed to pull a school bus around the Agora Circle while hungry participants and onlookers enjoyed a charity barbeque. Teams of any number contribute a minimum donation of $20 per team with all funds raised supporting the work of Big Brothers Big Sisters Thunder Bay. Lakehead Renews Free Tuition for 95%+ Averages and Launches New Citizenship Scholarships
Lakehead University offers up to four years of free tuition to Canadian students coming directly from a recognized Canadian high school with an average of 95% or higher. As part of its scholarship program renewal, Lakehead is also launching the Northwestern Ontario and Simcoe County Citizenship Scholarship. This scholarship, designed for high school students who exhibit active citizenship within their high school and community, will provide $12,000 over 4 years to successful applicants. Thunder Bay Attracts a World Leading MRI Research Scientist with Ties to Harvard University
Today the medical research community in the Northwest welcomes two new recruits to the region: Dr. Mitchell Albert is the first-ever Lakehead University/Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute Research Chair; and Mr. Scott Gillis holds a dual role as Director of Business Development and Commercialization for TBRRI and MaRS Innovation. Dr. Albert is a full-time faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at Lakehead University and will be making both research and teaching contributions to the new PhD program in Chemistry and Materials Science. Improving Quality of Care for Ontario Seniors: Early Researcher Awards Support Three Lakehead Students
Lakehead University's Centre for Education and Research on Aging and Health (CERAH), as a partner in the Ontario Research Coalition of Research Institutes/Centres on Health & Aging (ORC), has received funding for Early Researcher Awards that provide support to students to offset the cost of conducting research. This year, CERAH is pleased to announce that three Lakehead University students, Ashley Hope, Kathy Kortes-Miller, and Kimberly Ramsbottom, have been selected by the Centre to receive individual Early Researcher Awards valued from $7,000 - $10,000. The Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA) announced at its annual conference last Friday evening in St. John's Newfoundland, that Dr. Mary Lou Kelley is the recipient of the 2011 Award of Excellence in Hospice Palliative Care. Dr. Kelley is a pioneering and dedicated professor of social work at Lakehead University and an internationally recognized palliative care researcher. Resources and Sustainable Development in the Arctic: Lakehead Researcher Awarded CFI Funding
Dr. Chris Southcott, professor of sociology at Lakehead University, has been awarded a Leaders Opportunity Fund grant valued at $87,246 by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). This funding will offset research infrastructure costs to establish a new research network focused on investigating sustainable communities, cultures, and environments in the Circumpolar North. Research in Action: Diabetes Tent Combines Cultural Beliefs with Practical Solutions
Lakehead Master of Public Health student, Zsolt Toth, is turning his thesis research into an on-the-ground health education project for Aboriginal people with type 2 diabetes. MEAGlow Semiconductor Research Laboratory Opens at Lakehead University
A state-of-the-art semiconductor research laboratory officially opened today, June 10. A joint project between Lakehead University and MEAGlow Ltd. – an Ontario-based company established to help commercialize MEAGlow technology – the lab houses a Canadian-designed MEAGlow chemical film growth reactor, built in Thunder Bay, that grows very thin crystal layers of nitride semiconductors on micro, nano, and sub-atomic scales, including two dimensional (2-D) structures. CRIBE Invests $3 Million in Partnership Between G2 Biochem Ethanol and Lakehead University
CRIBE is providing $3 million for an innovative partnership between Lakehead University’s Biorefining Research Initiative (LU) and G2 BioChem in Chatham. G2 BioChem’s facility is the only provincial facility that allows the complete breakdown of wood fibre outside of a laboratory environment. This unique opportunity will allow Thunder Bay to be at the forefront of new uses for forest biomass. Lakehead University 2011 US National Student Steel Bridge Champion
Lakehead University’s Civil Engineering Steel Bridge Team fared well in all seven scoring categories at the 20th annual AISC/ASCE US National Student Steel Bridge Competition to win first place, beating 47 other universities. Lakehead is the only Canadian team to place in the top five overall since the inception of the competition and the first Canadian team to win the competition. Hosted by Texas A & M University, May 20 - 21, 2011, the annual competition attracts participants from across North America. NOSM Residents Rank First Nationwide on Medical Council of Canada Examinatio​ns
The results of the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) Part II qualifying examinations are in: NOSM’s residents completing training this spring ranked first among Canada’s 17 medical schools in overall performance, and achieved a 100 percent pass rate. Residents rated first in the category of legal, ethical and organizational aspects of the practice of medicine, with above-average standing in the categories of patient interaction and data acquisition. Lakehead Professor Emeritus Honoured with Mineral Species Name and Joint-Principal Editor Appointment
Dr. Roger Mitchell, Professor Emeritus, Lakehead University Department of Geology, in recognition of his significant work in mineralogy, has been honoured with his name being given to a newly discovered mineral. Mitchell has also been appointed co-editor of Mineralogical Magazine, with Dr. Peter Williams, Professor of Geology and Crystallography, University of Western Sydney, Australia. Lakehead University's Civil Engineering Steel Bridge Team Takes First Place Again at U.S. Midwest Regional Competition - Reaps Other Awards
A large contingent of Lakehead University civil engineering students traveled to the University of North Dakota to participate in the Annual ASCE Midwest Regional Student Conference and the AISC/ASCE Regional Qualifier Student Steel Bridge Competition. The Lakehead team had an incredible weekend with a first place in the steel bridge-building competition, second place in the technical paper competition, and a trophy for the Person-Mileage Participation award. Award-Winning Book Captures French Folktales and Legends from Northwestern Ontario
Contes et légendes de la baie du Tonnerre (Éditions du Nord-Ouest, 2010), written by Alain Nabarra and Marie-Noëlle Rinne, current and former professors of languages at Lakehead University, and illustrated by Lakehead graduate Dany Michaud, has won the Billochet du Jongleur award. The book features tales and legends told in French by Northwestern Ontario storytellers. Old Friends Reunite at Lakehead and Enter Clever Sustainability Video in TD’s Go Green Challenge
With a background in forestry and GIS, and a desire to improve the value that urban landscapes and neighbourhoods can get from trees, Lakehead students Bradley Doff and Peter Stevens created a four-minute stop-motion film that uses the Lakehead University-Thunder Bay campus as a case-study. The stop-motion film informs, entertains, and hopes to win the People's Choice Award for the TD Go Green Challenge. Lakehead Researchers Receive $2.5 Million in Funding for Resources and Sustainable Development in the Arctic
Lakehead researchers, led by Dr. Chris Southcott, have received $2.5 million from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Major Collaborative Research Initiatives grant program. Minister of State for Science and Technology, Gary Goodyear, was on campus to make the announcement, accompanied by Dr. Chad Gaffield, SSHRC President, and Kenora MP Greg Rickford.
