Lakehead Hosts Prominent Author Discussing How to Keep Research From Going Off the Rails
Prominent author and researcher, Dr. David Streiner, knows that research projects can easily get off track and will speak about how researchers can prevent that from happening. "Dr. Streiner will start his presentation by reviewing a partial list of Murphy's Laws as they affect research projects – for example, how anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and anything that can’t go wrong will go wrong too," said Lakehead's Bruce Weaver, Research Associate in the Centre for Research on Safe Driving, who is helping organize the talk. Lakehead's Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences presents the Distinguished Speaker Series with Dr. Streiner, Professor Emeritus in McMaster University's Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Lakehead University Holds National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
Lakehead University's Gender Issues Centre marked today's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women with a service in the Agora that featured poems, music and a video. "Violence against women is as important today as it was in 1989 when 14 women were killed at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal," said Althea Annan, Director of the Lakehead University Student Union's Gender Issues Centre. "We want people to feel empowered to end violence by recognizing and addressing society’s hostile attitudes against women within our national borders and beyond," Annan said. Lakehead University’s CERAH hosts public presentation on Palliative Care and Euthanasia
Lakehead University's Centre for Education and Research on Aging & Health (CERAH) is hosting a public presentation by Sharon Baxter called Let's Talk About Hospice Palliative Care First, an awareness campaign launched by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association. The campaign is in response to the apparent confusion in the minds of Canadians surrounding euthanasia, assisted suicide and hospice palliative care. Professionals working in hospice palliative care and health care are often at a loss about how to respond to these issues. The free presentation will discuss the campaign and how the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association's (CHPCA) resources can assist with these conversations. Lakehead University's Centre for Education and Research on Aging & Health (CERAH) is hosting a bi-annual palliative care conference entitled Life Transitions: Chronic Illness and Palliative Care. The conference will take place in Thunder Bay at the Victoria Inn, from November 7-9, 2012. The goal of the conference is to bring interdisciplinary palliative care providers together to share current information on end-of-life care and to facilitate networking and team building in communities throughout the region and beyond. Lakehead University Conference Discusses Strength-based Approach in Schools
An upcoming workshop hosted by Lakehead University's Centre of Excellence for Children and Adolescents with Special Needs will teach educators about the benefits of using a strength-based approach in schools. Uncovering Your Students' Potential: A Workshop on Integrating a Strengths-Based Approach will examine the idea that everyone has strengths and youth should be empowered to draw upon their different strengths to achieve their goals. "The research behind this demonstrates that educators who use a strength-based approach increase student success and reduce bullying," says Dr. Ed Rawana, Clinical Psychologist, Director of the Centre of Excellence for Children and Adolescents with Special Needs, and Director of Lakehead's Clinical Psychology Program. Lakehead Ranks Highly Among Ontario Peer Institutions in Maclean’s University Rankings
Lakehead University continues to shine among Ontario universities in its category. According to Maclean's University Rankings released today, Lakehead is ranked near the top in several important categories and second overall when compared to its peer universities in the province. Nationally, Lakehead places in the top five in several of the report's key points in its category of universities, including Total Research Dollars, and Student and Faculty Awards. This year's Maclean's University Rankings examined various key points from 19 universities across Canada. Lakehead University Scientists Awarded Canadian Foundation for Innovation Grants
Two research teams at Lakehead University have been awarded prestigious Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) Leaders Opportunity Fund grants to acquire specialized equipment to pursue their innovative research. "CFI investments equip researchers with the tools they need to think big and turn discoveries into innovative products and processes that benefit their communities," says CFI President and CEO, Dr. Gilles G. Patry. Lakehead University's Student Success Centre Source of High Scores in Globe and Mail Report
One year after its inception, the positive results of Lakehead University's Student Success Centre (SSC) are evident in the Globe and Mail's 2013 Canadian University Report. Released Tuesday, the report publishes students’ opinions on the diverse aspects of Canada's universities. Due in large part to Lakehead’s 15-month-old SSC, the University's grades have risen in numerous categories, including overall satisfaction with student services and career preparation. Lakehead Student Success Centre Director Heather Doyle says she’s excited to hear that students appreciate the hard work put forward by everyone at the SSC. Lakehead University Researchers Receive CIHR Grants Supporting Health Research
Lakehead University researchers have been awarded Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Operating Grants and other funding allowing them to continue pursuing their ground-breaking work - ranging from the management of dementia, treatment of atherosclerosis, and development of a new approach in cancer screening for First Nations women. An Operating Grant worth a total of $583,625 has been awarded to Dr. Rui Wang (Biology) to enable him to determine the connection between decreased production of hydrogen sulfide gas in blood vessels and the occurrence of atherosclerosis, a disease characterized by blood vessel inflammation, lipid and cholesterol deposition, and narrowing and stiffing of blood vessels. Dr. Elaine Wiersma (Health Sciences) will use $196,336 in funding to examine how the development of a self-management program can help people who have dementia. Lakehead University Calendar Highlights Beautiful Art By Youth
Two new Lakehead University calendars feature amazing artwork by students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 at Thunder Bay and Simcoe County schools. Developed by the Faculty of Education, the calendars display colourful art depicting the seasons, nature, outdoor sports, animals, Aboriginal artwork, and other subjects. Over 300 pieces of student artwork were submitted to Lakehead University for consideration in the calendar, and a contest was held to choose the winning selections. The calendars will be distributed free of charge to schools Lakehead University has partnered with and to potential students. Lakehead Professor Hosts Prince Albert II of Monaco in Eastern Canadian Arctic
Lakehead University sociology professor Dr. Chris Southcott recently hosted Prince Albert II of Monaco during the Prince's visit to the Northern communities of Iqaluit in Nunavut and Kuujjuaq in Northern Quebec as part of University of the Arctic (www.uarctic.org). The Lakehead University community will definitely recognize the music performed by the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, Oct. 11 in the Agora. Lakehead University Economics Professor Dr. Livio Di Matteo is joining the ranks of the senior fellows at the Fraser Institute for his research in health care spending and public finance. Major NSERC Training Grant Awarded to Lakehead University
Lakehead University has received a $1,647,075 grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) to train highly qualified personnel in medical imaging. The funding has been awarded through NSERC's Collaborative Research and Training Experience Program (CREATE). The purpose of the program is to support the training of highly qualified students and postdoctoral fellows from Canada and abroad through the development of innovative training programs. New Forensic Summer Camp for Budding Crime Scene Investigators
Lakehead's Department of Anthropology has teamed up with Superior Science to offer grade 5-9 children the chance to become crime scene investigators (CSI's) at a hands-on forensic camp. During these one-week camps, young investigative minds apply real forensic techniques, such as fingerprinting, DNA analysis, forensic odontology, ballistics and forensic entomology to solve age-appropriate crime scenes. Lakehead Engineers Place First Among International Entrants at Bridge-building Competition
On May 25 and 26, Lakehead competed at the prestigious 2012 National Student Steel Bridge Competition (NSSBC) as the reigning 2011 champions. This year's inter-collegiate challenge required civil engineering students from 47 American and three Canadian universities, as well as a Chinese and Mexican university to design, fabricate and construct a steel bridge. Harvard educated. Canadian born. Lakehead University is pleased to introduce its Founding Dean of Law, Lee Stuesser. Born and raised in northern Saskatchewan, Stuesser is currently working as a professor and administrator at Australia's Bond University, where he has been since 2008. Before that, he was a Law Professor with the University of Manitoba for more than 20 years and he has also taught at the University of Ottawa and Royal Roads University. New CRC Chair Enhances Lakehead's Reputation for Sustainable Energy Innovation
Lakehead University is proud to announce its newest Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Bioenergy and Biorefining - Dr. Sudip Rakshit. This research scientist excels at transforming both commonplace and unusual materials into potential sources of bioenergy. Dr. Rakshit will join the Chemical Engineering Department as the CRC in Bioenergy and Biorefining. He is one of only 12 new CRCs appointed in Ontario. He is developing innovative methods to convert renewable biomass such as wood and agriculture products into biofuels and renewable chemicals. Students allowed to vote on tuition increase
The Lakehead University Board of Governors today unanimously passed a motion to allow students to remain at the table for a discussion and vote on tuition fees. The motion stated that pending a review of the institution’s Conflict of Interest Bylaw with respect to students speaking and voting on tuition fees, the Board will suspend that Bylaw so that student governors could both debate and vote on the issue at this afternoon's meeting. Today, the Province of Ontario announces $1M in funding to support and advance the work of Dr. Mitchell Albert, recently recruited scientist at the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute (TBRRI) and Research Chair and Professor of Chemistry at Lakehead University. Dr. Albert is an experienced innovator who has co-invented a powerful new diagnostic technology - hyperpolarized (HP) gas MRI. Dr. Albert and his team are taking this breakthrough method to the next level by developing new technology that will improve imaging for asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary embolism, lung and breast cancer, stroke, atherosclerosis, and diseases of the brain. It wasn't a typical lunch hour at Sherbrooke Public School today. SHARCNET - the Final Frontier for Lakehead and TBRRI Scientists
Today fearless scientists boldly went where no man has gone before. Attendees of the Lakehead/TBRRI/SHARCNET Joint Symposium 2012 entered the realm of high-performance computing as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of SHARCNET. What is SHARCNET you might ask? SHARCNET stands for Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computing Network and is a consortium of 17 Ontario universities and research institutes. Researchers from Lakehead University and the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute (TBRRI) are exploring strange new worlds and making discoveries in chemistry, biology, geology, physics, and the health sciences using SHARCNET technology. Lakehead Students Connect with Aboriginal Entrepreneurs
A team of Lakehead University students has won a prestigious Entrepreneurs First! grant from the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). Lakehead's Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) beat out 50 other SIFE teams to win a $2,500 dollar award. Their proposal, The Aboriginal Economic Development Program, will help Northwestern Ontario Aboriginal entrepreneurs enhance their business skills and stimulate economic growth in Aboriginal communities. Much anticipated LUNSA Pow Wow draws huge numbers from across the region
The Lakehead University Native Student Association (LUNSA) is gearing up to welcome hundreds of guests at its annual Pow Wow during the weekend of March 17 and 18 at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse. The theme of this year's event is New Beginnings and symbolizes what students have experienced and accomplished together throughout the academic year. "We chose our theme based on the spring renewal starting with new season, new relationships, and new paths. We are honoured to have our youth be part of our event as the Host, Co-Host and Special Honorary drum groups, and we hope to encourage them to move forward in their new beginnings," says Nicole McKay, President of LUNSA. Canadian delegation travels to Mexico to discuss Indigenous higher education
Lakehead University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Brian Stevenson and University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons are co-leading a group of Canadian universities on a trip to Mexico City to discuss Indigenous higher education. Representatives from the two countries will spend March 11-12 establishing partnerships and gaining a better understanding of the complexities surrounding the issue. Professor Funds Education and Literacy for Home Village in Bangladesh
The small village of Gohailbari in the Rajbari District of Bangladesh has a new school, thanks to Dr. Mohammad Nasir Uddin, a professor of electrical engineering at Lakehead University. In 2010, Dr. Uddin established the Dr. Nasir-Shahida Foundation, named for himself and his wife. This charitable foundation recently established the Arshed-Sajeda Primary School, in honour of Dr. Uddin's parents. Leaner, More Responsive Lakehead Board
The Board of Governors at Lakehead University will be smaller in size - and more effective - after members agreed today to reduce their numbers from 30 to 17. A Week of Celebration, Education, and Innovation

Faculty and students were also honoured at a special awards reception for research excellence. Discovery in the Mall
Children and adults alike embarked upon a voyage of discovery as they talked to Lakehead University experts about everything from anthropology to electrical engineering to DNA testing. They also visited intriguing interactive displays. City of Thunder Bay Mayor Keith Hobbs launched the "Discovery in the Mall" event with a reading of the official 7th Annual Research & Innovation Week Proclamation, followed by DNA testing on Lakehead University President Brian Stevenson and other dignitaries. Lakehead Researchers make ground-breaking discovery
Dr. Rui Wang, the Vice-President of Research, Economic Development and Innovation at Lakehead University, has been fascinated with hydrogen sulfide for more than a decade. For the past three years, Dr. Wang and his team of scientists have been trying to figure out how mammalian cells can sense changes in oxygen levels and take necessary measures to cope with hypoxia oxygen and blood flow deprivation).
