Restaurant Industrialist Paul Weber Leads Lakehead University Orillia Campus Capital Campaign

(September 25, 2008 Thunder Bay, ON) Businessman Paul Weber hopes to match the stunning success of his roadside eatery, Webers Restaurants, with his newest project leading the Lakehead University Orillia Campus $20-million Capital Campaign. Weber's hugely popular drive-in restaurants just north of the GTA on Highway 11, which had become an Ontario landmark and cultural icon, were sold in 2004. But he is not one to rest on his laurels. When he found out about Lakehead University Orillia Campus and the plan to build it "green," he came forward to offer to head the campaign to raise $20-million to build the permanent campus.

When completed, the Lakehead University Orillia Campus will be the first such initiative in Canada to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum standards. One of Canada's leading architectural firms and specialists in the development of LEED-standard buildings, Moriyama and Teshima, recently unveiled the first structure in Lakehead's new campus. "I foresee Lakehead University achieving worldwide acclaim and attracting conferences and leaders from all disciplines," Weber said.

Currently, Weber is recruiting people to work with him on his campaign team. "The campaign will be targeted in several geographic and industrial sectors, including the Greater Toronto Area, the Horseshoe Valley, and the regional community," stated campaign manager Lee Pigeau. "The campaign team will aim at alumni and industry, as well as the 'green' sector. We are looking for leaders from all of these areas."

Many people are interested in seeing the social and economic benefits that will be realized by the City of Orillia and Simcoe County through the development of Lakehead University Orillia Campus. "People of all ages and backgrounds have been involved in making a financial investment, and by volunteering. The spirit of leadership is very much alive in the province of Ontario," Weber said. "People see the benefits and want this project completed."

Lakehead University has recently opened a Lakehead University Orillia Campus Project Advancement office in Toronto. Anyone who is interested in the Project or Campaign is invited to call the office at 705-330-4018 or e-mail to
